Persephone's Daughters

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

We publish our issues on a case-by-case basis depending on our schedule and submission volume. Every issue is published first online, and then in print several months later.

Unfortunately, as we are a small journal comprised entirely of volunteers who pay for all our fees out of pocket, we are unable to pay for your work. We hope that one day this will change and small journals will receive the funding they deserve for their contributors.

We only accept previously unpublished work. You may submit work that has been published on a personal blog.

However, If your work is declined the first time around, you’re welcome to submit more immediately after we notify you, within our reading period.

All material submitted should be based around the theme of empowering individuals who have experienced various forms of abuse (sexual, emotional, physical, racial, verbal, etc), or other forms of degradation (harassment, catcalling, threats, etc). Submissions based on other themes will be returned unread. You do not have to have experienced these forms of violence personally in order to submit, as long as your work aims to empower individuals who have. All identities are welcome: just remember the theme.

You may submit to more than one category!

What we are looking for in your cover letter and bio: A simple greeting, maybe a few cool facts about yourself so we can get to know a bit about you, as well as a brief bio (50 words or fewer) including your name and any other information you think is important for us to know. This can include previous publication history, any prizes you’ve won, your favorite cat names, why feminism is important to you, etc.

We ask for First North American Rights to publish. Following publication, all rights revert back to the writer or artist; we only ask that you grant permission for us to archive your work on our site, consider it for inclusion in possible print issues, and credit us as the place your work first appeared.

To state the obvious: No racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or pornographic work, please. If you submit us work of such material, you will be rejected immediately and not invited to resubmit in the future. Curse words are fine. In addition, we understand that such degrading and abusive experiences that your work will center around may include sexist and racist acts, etc. What we mean by “no racist, sexist, homophobic, or pornographic work” is that you should not submit work in which YOU are intentionally endorsing these acts or supporting them.

1. You may submit a maximum of three prose pieces, three art pieces, and one poem.

2. You may submit multiple pieces in one document/submission.

3. Please submit using the name that you want to be published under. Pseudonyms and anonymous submissions are more than welcome.

Submissions that do not follow all of the above guidelines may be returned unread.
